Henry: 8 months!

We are two thirds of the way through our first year. Which basically means I need to start planning his birthday party immediately.

Henry hasn't been to the doctor in a while, so I honestly have no clue how big he is. I know that he is somewhere between 19 and 20 pounds, and that is ALL that I know. His head doesn't seem to be getting any smaller in proportion to his body, so ole Henny big head is here to stay. PS - my nick name for Henry is Henny. His nickname was supposed to be Hank (which I love and find absolutely adorable), which is a big reason we named him Henry, but not one time have I ever felt compelled to call him Hank.

My favorite thing to report on is Henry's teeth. He currently has one tooth on top and THREE on the bottom. It's a really good look for a baby, I guess. We had been paying so much attention to when the top teeth were going to come in, that we didn't event notice that a side tooth on the bottom had popped out. I looked it up on the internet (you know, that thing, the internet), and everything is coming in out of order. Maybe a wisdom tooth will be next? Either way, I desperately need a break from teething. I can imagine how badly it hurts to bust a tooth through your gums, and Henry definitely lets us know how uncomfortable it is. They need to make XL teething-sized bottles of baby tylenol because we go through one in like a week.

The next order of business is crawling. Henry CAN crawl, he just chooses not to. Kind of like how I CAN cook, but it's really just not for me. He goes backwards, and around in a circle, but for some reason, as soon as he needs to go forward, he gives up and starts whining. I have no explanation for it other than he is teething 24/7 these days, and isn't in the right frame of mind to take on new challenges at the moment. Plus, he knows that mommy can't say no to a sad baby, so he is probably just waiting for me to come pick him up when he is on his tummy.

He is talking, as in making lots of noises and sounds, but no words yet. I seriously hold his fingers on my mouth, Helen Keller style, while I say mama over and over again. Doesn't seem to be making a difference. He makes a lot of "ba ba ba" sounds, but no ma or da.

Henry is getting into EVERYTHING these days. He straight up pulled a lamp off my nightstand today (as I was holding him), so he cannot be trusted with anything, really. Sometimes I have no choice but to let him sit on my lap while I do my makeup, and he goes insane with my makeup drawer. I wouldn't care except I have lip glosses in there that are like nasty 5 year old relics from college that may have been dropped on the floor of a bar at some point. We are now the people who at a restaurant have to take everything off of the table. The people who have no control over their infant. Henry is also finally starting to get mad when you take things away from him. Before, it didn't seem to matter. But now, it's like ... real bad.

My child is still an excellent night sleeper. He averages about 11.5 hours a night and never wakes up. His naps have been a moving target for the past month or two. I feel like I spend every day stressing out about his naps. The science of baby napping is so delicate. It's like you want them to sleep as much as possible (so you can watch your DVR), but you know that if their first nap of the day is too long, that you will pay for it when he doesn't nap the rest of the day. And by dinner time, he is so unbelievably tired and grumpy that there's nothing you can do to make it better. Imagine a very fine scale that can detect grains of sand added or taken away. That's the best imagery I can provide for how on edge naps make me all day.

So here he is... my baby...

These pictures are getting harder and harder to take...

I love this little baby more than anything on earth. He is my little angel, and I'm super proud of both of us for making it this far. Of course, we couldn't have done it without that dad person that lives in the house, too.

Lauren

The most perfectly preppy 1st birthday!

One of Henry's bffs had her first birthday party this past weekend. It was a really fun pool party that featured hot dogs and sangria. The theme was preppy pink and navy, a la Vineyard Vines. There was a lot of cute whale action happening, and we were happy to dress the part. Had to match the invitation. Duh...

"Preppy" is not really a word I use to describe my personal style. I LOVE monogramming and J. Crew, but somehow I just don't think of myself as being preppy. But, of course, I have plenty of items in my closet that can be combines for occaisions such as this...
tank // Alternative Apparel
skirt // Banana Republic
swim suit // J. Crew***
bracelets // Kate Spade & Henri Bendel
sunglasses // Oliver Peoples
sandals // Frye (similar)

Seriously. The most amazingly gorgeous cookies I have ever seen...

It's really nice when you show up to a party and the food matches your outfit...

This cake. I have no words...

Me and my sweet baby angel boy...

My guys. Henry is all about sticking out his tongue lately...

First time in a real swimming pool...

The beautiful birthday girl with her mama. Navy and pink always and forever...

He loves his dad...

I think this picture belongs in a gallery somewhere. The way all the babies are looking elsewhere and Henry is looking straight at me feels very artistic. Also slightly creepy...

I made this...

I can't believe that little girl is already a year old. She was still a sweet little baby when I met her, and now she is a ONE YEAR OLD. Crazy. The moral of this story is that I need to start planning Henry's October birthday part immediately. He loves watching Real Housewives with me, so maybe we'll do a Bravo-themed party. I mean, RIGHT?

Love,
Lauren

*** Do not buy this swimsuit. It is really cute on (no, I am not going to post pictures of me wearing a swim suit), but the lining is nude and it should match the red. The reason it matters is because the straps hook onto the inside lining, and when you wear it, the tension causes the nude lining to stick out. J. Crew should know better!

Matching family style: color blocking

Today's family style happened by chance. Henry has the romper below, and I was just clicking around Urban Outfitters and came across a perfectly matched men's tee. It is as if the universe was speaking to me directly.

I really love the white and tan sandals. There is currently a mint color way that is on sale! The saddle shoes are on sale too - only $19.99 and they come in other colors. Also, if these culottes were a little less orange and slightly more coral, they totally would have made the list. My 3rd grade teacher wore wool culottes every day to work, and I now have an unhealthy retrospective obsession with culottes.

Matching family style: chambray stripes

I've decided that I am on to something when it comes to matching family outfits. Henry and Tom were matching this past weekend, and I thought why do they get to have all the fun? I found some mom options to round out the entire chambray stripe theme and a bonus outfit for baby. Thank goodness I do not have a girl, because this would get insane real fast.

Tom has the above shirt from Old Navy. I think this is the first thing I have ever bought him from Old Navy, but I saw it in the window and loved it instantly. Old Navy's men's clothing typically leave something to be desired, but I definitely subscribe to some of the short sleeve shirts they have one sale right now.

Henry has the striped shorts and they are from JC Penney. I literally never shop at JC Penney, but one day I was desperate to find a tshirt for Henry so I checked out the kids' department. Let me tell you... For BABY boys, JC Penney literally has the best selection of clothes of anywhere I have been (other than Baby Gap which is much more expensive). I feel that Penney's has a lot of actual clothes for baby boys. Most department stores just have very baby-ish clothes for baby boys. In my opinion, boys need to graduate to real clothes much sooner than baby girls, but there tends to be a big gap from 6-12 months for boys in terms of "cool" or "fun" clothes. So whether or not JC Penney is somewhere you typically shop, I would give their boys department a whirl.

I don't have any of the lady items you see above, but I am especially obsessed with that clutch. It also comes in hot pink for $145. (Husband, these are the type of things you should file away in your brain for the future). I also love this dress from Old Navy. It comes in red and blue, and the blue would fit perfectly with the above theme. Personally, I've been eyeing the red for a while, but I don't think I want it (or any item of clothing ever) bad enough to have to wear a strapless bra for it.

Lauren

Shopping for baby boys...

... Can be challenging. There is a lot of cute stuff out there for boys, but it definitely takes more work and perseverance than shopping for little girls. Girls can wear all sorts of clothes: dresses, rompers, tutus, leggings, skirts, shorts, pants, onesies, etc. Boys can wear shirts, pants, and shorts. And most of those come with obnoxious graphic prints or lots of "sayings" about loving mommy or something. So basically, if you have the same taste in baby clothes as I do, that pretty much leaves you with a baby boy who has clothes in every color combination of stripes possible. Stripes, people. That's what your baby will wear if you don't want them to be "mommy's #1 hunk all-star that's tough just like dad."

I have been slowly picking up little things for the baby here and there from Carters, Ruelala, Gilt, Baby Gap, Old Navy, and one or two boutiques. You just have to be patient and you can find really great stuff for your boy... hopefully on sale. I don't think I have paid full price for any one piece of baby clothing yet. That's what grandma is for. In my opinion/from my experience, I have never had any luck at Babies R Us or Target. And Target has THE CUTEST stuff for girls. They have a few cute things for little boys, but literally nothing for baby boys. What a letdown. Also, online sale sites like Ruelala, Gilt, and Zulily have totally unique and fun baby clothes now and then.

My biggest tip for baby boy shopping is NEVER BUY KNIT BOTTOMS. Basically every little boy outfit comes with navy, brown, or grey pants. So don't bother buying any seperate bottoms in this category, because you simply can't avoid acquiring them anytime you buy sets. I made this mistake early on, and the baby already has like six pairs of grey pants.

Some of my favorite purchases so far...

Clockwise from top left:
1. Vneck onesie and knit shorts by EverAfter. I like guys in vneck shirts. I also like babies in vneck shirts.
2. Chevron long sleeve bodysuit from Old Navy. My guess is that chevron is on the out. For that reason, I haven't committed to bringing any into my house, but the baby can wear it before it becomes too passe. I love chevron, but it has saturated the market so deeply that I just assume it's only a matter of time before customers and retailers get sick of it.
3. Knit peacoat from Baby Gap. I bought this on the clearance rack for $5.97. It was originally $40. I am amazing.
4. Blue stripe giraffe pajamas. I have no idea who makes this and I am too lazy to go upstairs and figure it out. It is from a really cute baby store in northwest Houston, called Chic Baby.
5. Multi color terrycloth playsuit from Baby Gap. I love terrycloth baby clothes, and I have bought a lot of terrycloth onesies from Gap and Carters. I think subconciously I feel it will be less likely to stain. It's like your baby's entire outfit is made out of a bib. Our son is due September 29th, so terrycloth won't be too warm.
6. Red stripe shirt and shorts by Coccoli. For when the baby is feeling Parisian.
7. Red stripe sweater and plaid pants from Baby Gap. No lie... I got the sweater for like $3 and the pants for $5. It helps that our baby is being born in fall and I am purchasing cold-weather clothes in June that are probably 10 months old. They also had the scary "final sale" sticker on them.
8. "Boys Rule" tee from Carters. I really don't like baby stuff with words on them (unless it's a monogram!), but I can deal with this one. It's not too dorky, and I really like the lightning bolts.

If you have any great shopping tips for baby boys, please share in the comment section! I would love to hear your secrets!

Lauren

No, I am not disappointed to be having a boy...

I need to address this. I never once said I really wanted a girl, or that I really wanted a boy. And yet, I have had a lot of reactions from people that indicate that they feel sorry for me or something that I am having a boy. One woman even asked me if I was disappointed. Another person said, "well that's ok, boys are easier anyway." And I know a lot of well-meaning, sweet people who love their sons say this with no bad intentions, but when I hear about how much "boys love their moms" or that "boys are the best" I kind of sense that they are overemphasizing something completely obvious to make me feel better. I mean, if I was having a girl, I would assume that she would love me too.

I did/still admit that buying clothes for little girls is more exciting because the options are like 5:1::girls:boys... but when it comes to the relationship and love you have with your child, I don't really think shopping plays too much of a role. Obviously, I know more about girls because I am one. But other than that, when it comes down to the gender of a human being, I truly have never had a preference for this baby.

In most of the world, gender discrimination exists in a way that promotes baby boys and hurts baby girls. And we all agree this is terrible, right? But so far my experience in America has been that there are a lot of people out there who think having a baby boy is a consolation prize. It seems that in earlier decades of American culture, there was still this value placed on having a boy to carry on the family name. Like for instance, my grandma assumes that Thomas must just be "over the moon" about having a boy. Have yall experienced this at all? Or know what I am talking about? I love statistics, maybe you have some interesting gender statistics for me?

Anyway, I would just like to declare that we're having a baby boy, and I am VERY excited about it! No, I was not hoping for a girl. Yes, I understand there are advantages to having a boy, just like there are advantages to having a girl. I will admit that perhaps I am being overly sensitive about this issue, but I am really excited about our little boy, and I guess it just makes me feel a little deflated when people act like it's a let down.

And because I have no picture to go with this post, here I am at 22 weeks...

Love,
Lauren

PS - Thank you to my sister in law for the inspriation for this post!

Nursery ideas...

I am super excited to create a nursery for our baby. Obviously, I had to wait until we knew we were having a boy to move on any major ideas and color schemes. From my experience with my nephew, boys quickly become too big and manly for baby stuff... so I want the nursery to be cool and slightly modern instead of sweet and cutesy. Plus it will save me some monayyyy in the longrun.

A lot of the room is dictated by three givens. 1. I have known from the beginning that I want a simple, white Jenny Lind crib. They're super affordable, I like the classic appeal, and I had one when I was a baby. 2. I already have that wood dresser from pottery barn (currently in our master bedroom), and it is the perfect size/height to put a changing table on top of. 3. I really want to get a nice glider that will last, and I could see myself using navy again if we have a little girl in the future.

For fabric, I like this seafoam ikat print from Spoonflower, which by the way, is the coolest fabric website ever. So I am thinking curtains in the ikat, and maybe a small part of the crib bedding in the same print. Or a lumbar pillow for the glider.

The whole thing is still just an idea for now, but I have a feeling the baby is going to end up having the best room in the house.

Lauren
